[Hiring] Legal Counsel, Commercial & IP @Joko

Other Jobs To Apply

Role Description

As Legal Counsel, Commercial & IP, you will work hand in hand with our business teams to negotiate the partnerships that drive Joko's growth, and you will own our contracts, IP, commercial disputes and insurance. You will report directly to the Head of Legal (Maya).

IP and technology

  • Define the legal framework for Juno, our AI shopping assistant: our rights to merchant content and catalogue data, the use of third-party brands and logos in the app and our marketing, and the ownership of AI-generated content.
  • Protect the Joko brands across our markets with our IP counsel, from trademarks, domain names, oppositions and renewals to action against third parties that infringe our rights.
  • Work with Product and Marketing to secure new features and brands before they launch.

Deals and commercial relationships

  • Sit alongside the business teams in their negotiations with merchants and brands: partnership agreements, data-sharing contracts, CPG and B2B deals, and the contracts for our new business lines.
  • Structure our merchant and brand relationships so they hold up under French and EU rules on restrictive commercial practices, including significant imbalance and the abrupt termination of established commercial relationships.
  • Lead or support the negotiation of contracts on exclusivity, most-favoured-nation, competition law risks and parity clauses.
  • Build the templates, playbooks, red lines and fallback positions the business teams use every day, and turn them into AI skills.

Disputes and risk

  • Handle disputes with merchants, partners and suppliers together with the teams who own the relationship, from formal notices to settlement, protecting both our position and the relationship.
  • Brief and manage our litigation counsel when a dispute goes to court.
  • Own our insurance programme (D&O, cyber, travel and any new line), from renewals to claims, and build an international programme with our brokers so coverage follows us into each new country.

Qualifications

  • 4 to 6 years of experience in commercial or IP/IT law, including time in a top-tier law firm.
  • In-house experience in a tech or consumer company is a strong plus.
  • Negotiated complex commercial agreements directly with counterparties, in French and in English.
  • Experience in commercial disputes, restrictive commercial practices or IP/IT matters related to AI is a strong plus.
  • Understanding of how a business makes money and using contracts to support it.
  • Ability to turn positions into templates and playbooks that non-lawyers can use.
  • Master's degree in business law, IP/IT law or contract law from a leading French law school.
  • Fluency in French and English; another European language is a plus.
  • Clear writing skills, decision-making with incomplete information, and a preference for the pace of a scale-up.
  • Curiosity about AI and a desire to learn how to build tools that change legal work.

Benefits

  • Flexible remote work options.
  • Work from anywhere for up to 3 months per year.
  • Top-market compensation.
  • Equity for everyone with the chance to own a piece of what you build.
  • Half-day each week dedicated to leveling up with AI.
  • Yearly offsite in amazing locations and budget for team-building events & monthly in-person gatherings.
  • Contribution to your ClassPass subscription.
  • 8-week leave paid 100% for the second parent.
  • …and much more.

2. HOW DO YOU USE THE DIFFERENT COMMUNICATION TOOLS IN DIFFERENT SITUATIONS?

5. HOW DO YOU PROCESS INFORMATION?

Several years ago, I was working in a team to plan a big event. My supervisor made us all work as a team before the big day. One of our activities has been to find out how each of us processes information...

Just like your schedule, how you track files and other information is very important. After all, everything is digital!...

9. HOW DO YOU PREPARE FOR A MEETING AND PREPARE A MEETING? WHAT DO YOU SEE HAPPENING DURING THE MEETING?

Just as communication is essential when working remotely, so is organization. Because you won't have those opportunities in the elevator or a casual conversation in the lunchroom, you should take advantage of the little time you have in a video or phone conference...

10. HOW DO YOU USE TECHNOLOGY ON A DAILY BASIS, IN YOUR WORK AND FOR YOUR PLEASURE?

This is a great question because it shows your comfort level with technology, which is very important for a remote worker because you will be working with technology over time...
